![]() That being said, as a total package, Moons of Madness does keep the tension going throughout its playtime. While the atmosphere is fantastic – sucking you into what’s happening on screen, and the visuals are on point – Lovecraftian horror looking its finest, it does rely on cheap jump scares to deliver the big scares. Both games exist in the same thematic universe, but playing one is not a prerequisite to enjoy the other. Moons of Madness draws upon the rich lore and mythology of Funcom’s Secret World Legends. To be perfectly frank… it is to an extent. Overcome obstacles using computers, electrical systems, rovers, solar panels and more, then go beyond the outpost and explore the darker side of Mars. The important question, however – is the game scary? ![]() You can die, and there are game overs, but for the most part the game is very linear – walking from A to B, with the only deviations being if you decide to hunt for documents to explain more of the story. ![]() The main gameplay takes the form of exploring the outpost areas, finding notes and piecing together what’s happened, and what’s currently happening – very much like a walking simulator, but with the action kicked up a notch. As you venture deeper into the nightmare, you begin to realise that you’re not the first person to have had these strange visions and nightmares, and of all the folk stationed with you – you may be the sanest. You play as Shane Newehart, an engineer stationed on Trailblazer Alpha – a research outpost built to further the search for intelligent life, but is that all there is to it? Almost immediately you know things are off, as Shane suffers from strange nightmares about strange figures and black, tentacle-like growths all over the outpost. Developed by Norwegian independent studio Rock Pocket Games and published by Funcom, Moons of Madness is a Lovecraftian cosmic horror game, set in the isolated confines of a scientific outpost on Mars.
